About Elder Mediation SA

A Different Way Through Hard Conversations

Most families don’t fall apart because they don’t care.

They fall apart because no one shows them how to talk when the stakes are high.

Later life brings decisions that are emotionally loaded and structurally complex: care, independence, money, legacy, relationships, and institutional power.

These conversations aren’t difficult because families are broken — they’re difficult because there’s no shared framework for navigating them with dignity.

That’s where mediation comes in.

Why This Work Exists

I founded this practice after seeing the same pattern repeat itself across families, institutions, and professional teams.

Important decisions were being made:

  • in crisis
  • under pressure
  • through silence or escalation
  • by default, not by design.

Older adults were losing voice in decisions about their own lives.

Adult children were carrying unbearable responsibility with no structure for dialogue.

Families with strong values and shared history were being pulled into conflict.

Not because of bad intentions, but because the process itself was broken.

I believe something different is possible.

What I Believe

I believe:

Dignity should never be collateral damage in decision-making.

Disagreement does not mean dysfunction.

Autonomy and support are not opposites.

Families are capable of navigating complexity when given structure.

Institutions respond better to clarity than confrontation.

Monica Hartman, Mediator

Most of all, I believe that process matters.

How decisions are made determines whether they hold — legally, emotionally, and relationally.

My Role

I don’t decide what’s fair.

I don’t take sides.

I don’t replace legal, financial,

or medical professionals.

My role is to create a structured, neutral space where:
  • older adults remain central in decisions affecting their lives

  • family members can speak honestly without dominating or withdrawing

  • real concerns surface beneath surface arguments

  • professionals can do their work without conflict blocking progress

I help people move from stuck conversations to workable decisions they can actually live with.

Happy multigenerational family

Who This Work Is For

This practice serves:

  • older adults who want to preserve autonomy and dignity
  • families navigating care, wealth, succession, or relationship transitions
  • siblings struggling with alignment across distance or difference
  • couples facing later-life separation
  • individuals and groups in conflict with institutions meant to serve them

Some come proactively. Others come in the middle of conflict. Both are welcome.

How This Practice Is Different

Elder-centered, family-inclusive:

the elder’s voice leads, without excluding others

Structured neutrality:

no one dominates, no one disappears

Planning and crisis support:

before things escalate — or after they already have

Collaborative by design:

working alongside advisors, not competing with them

Virtual and in-person:

built for families across provinces and continents

The Outcome That Matters Most

Successful mediation isn’t just about agreements on paper.

It’s when families realize they can face difficult transitions without losing each other.

It’s when older adults feel heard instead of managed.

It’s when decisions are made deliberately — not by fear, pressure, or default.

That’s the work.

If you’re facing conversations that feel too important to get wrong, you don’t have to navigate them alone.
